The NANS Osun Joint Campus Committee (JCC), led by its Chairman, Comrade Solomon Ayobami Abel (AY Aluta), alongside JCC appointees, the Osun State Polytechnic, Iree SUG Caretaker Chairperson, faculty and departmental presidents, and other comrades, intervened today, January 27, 2025, to address pressing issues affecting students at Iree Polytechnic.

The intervention focused on critical concerns including transportation (bike operators’ charges), PHCN power outages, overcharging on meters, school fees increment, and excessive charges by cybercafe operators on campus.

Transportation Charges Reduced

Reports of exorbitant transportation fees charged by bike operators prompted Comrade Solomon Ayobami Abel to visit Osun State Polytechnic, Iree. He was warmly received by the SUG Caretaker Chairperson and faculty and departmental presidents. Together, they proceeded to the bike park serving the campus. After deliberations, an agreement was reached to reduce transportation fares for key routes, including from Campus Gate to Koko Campus and from Poly Junction to Campus Gate. The newly agreed fares will take effect next week.

PHCN Power Issues Resolved

The leadership also visited the PHCN office in Iree to address complaints about unstable electricity supply and arbitrary disconnections in student-populated areas. The PHCN management warmly welcomed the delegation.

Following agitations by Comrade Abel and his team, immediate calls were made to the distribution center, resulting in the restoration of electricity in Iree. Furthermore, assurances were given that disconnections in student-dominated areas would no longer occur arbitrarily.

Engagement with the Polytechnic Management

Later in the day, a meeting was held with the management of Osun State Polytechnic, Iree. The Dean of Student Affairs (DSA), the Students Affairs Officer (SAO), and two senior lecturers represented the institution. During the meeting, the NANS JCC leadership briefed the management on earlier resolutions with the bike operators and PHCN officials. The DSA, on behalf of the management, commended Comrade Ayobami Abel for his proactive efforts in addressing student welfare concerns.

The discussion then shifted to the issue of the proposed school fees increment. Comrade Abel highlighted certain fees that he recommended for removal from the fee structure. The DSA assured the delegation that the matter would be discussed with the top management, and a follow-up meeting would be scheduled to address the concerns.

Cybercafe Charges to Be Reviewed

The NANS JCC leadership also engaged with campus cybercafe operators over reports of exorbitant service charges. After deliberations, the operators agreed to review their pricing structure and provide feedback to the SUG leadership.

The intervention by the NANS Osun JCC underscores its commitment to student welfare and its readiness to address pressing issues through dialogue and engagement with relevant stakeholders.
