Against MTN Unjust Subscription Price Hike
It’s no longer a rumour the recent subscription price increments by MTN Nigeria have placed an enormous burden on the already stretched wallets of millions of Nigerians.
At a time when citizens are grappling with rising inflation, unemployment and skyrocketing costs of basic commodities, such a drastic and seemingly unregulated increase is both inconsiderate and exploitative.
MTN new pricing disproportionately affects lower-income earners, students and small businesses that depend on affordable internet access for education, work and trade.
With Nigeria economy being increasingly digitized, internet access is no longer a luxury but a necessity.
By making connectivity more expensive, MTN is inadvertently stifling opportunities for millions.
This pattern of corporate greed also highlights the lack of empathy for the struggles faced by everyday Nigerians.
Instead of easing the cost of services or offering relief packages in challenging times, MTN price hike further widens the digital divide.
As a bonafide concerned citizen of this country I hereby Calls for Regulation and Balance
To address this, the following measures must be considered:
Regulatory Oversight:
The Nigerian Communications Commission (NCC) must intervene immediately to regulate price increments and ensure telecom providers cannot arbitrarily impose hikes.
Public Dialogue:
Telecom companies like MTN should engage in transparent conversations with consumer groups before any price adjustments.
Affordable Plans:
MTN must introduce tiered plans that cater to different income levels, ensuring everyone has access to essential services.
Corporate Responsibility:
Telecom providers must adopt more socially responsible pricing practices, considering the economic realities faced by Nigerians.
The time for MTN to act is now or else we divert, migrate and render their service useless in Nigeria.
Nigerians deserve fair, humane and transparent pricing for essential services—not exploitation under the guise of profit-making. Regulatory bodies, students community, advocacy groups and consumers must demand accountability and equitable pricing to safeguard Nigerians’ right to affordable connectivity.
