DEMOCRACY DAY REFLECTION: A CALL TO ACTION FOR OSUN STATE GOVERNMENT
_12/06/2025_
As we commemorate Democracy Day, we, the leadership of NANS JCC Osun Axis, in collaboration with other student stakeholders, express our profound disappointment and disillusionment with the Osun State government's failure to uphold the promises of June 12 and honor the legacy of MKO Abiola.
The ideals of democracy, which include freedom, justice, and equality, seem to be mere rhetoric in our state.
The recent increase in tuition fees across all institutions in Osun State, without any corresponding measures to support students, is a stark reminder of the disconnect between the government and the student community. Students who dare to express their grievances are met with suspensions, expulsions, and intimidation. This is not the democracy we were promised.
We demand that the Osun State government takes immediate action to address the following pressing issues:
1. Immediate reduction of tuition fees:
The astronomical increase of tuition is exorbitant and unsustainable for many students. We request a substantial reduction to make education accessible to all.
2. Recognition of student bodies: We demand that student organizations be recognized and involved in shaping the educational system and addressing the challenges faced by students.
3. Regularization of student grants and bursaries: Students deserve timely and adequate financial support to enable them to focus on their academic pursuits.
4. Provision of optimum security: Students should feel safe in their academic environments, free from fear of intimidation, harassment, or violence.
5. Reorientation of management bodies: We call for seminars and workshops to sensitize management bodies on the importance of respecting students' rights and freedoms.
We, the over 250,000 Nigerian students in Osun State, stand united in our demand for a better educational system. We say,
"Dare to struggle, dare to win!"
We will not be silenced or intimidated. We will continue to agitate for our rights and demand accountability from our government.
Happy Democracy Day to all evergallant Nigerian students!
May oppressors never undermine the omoluabi in us!💪✊️
