Yesterday, July 10, 2025, the peaceful town of Ilawe-Ekiti was plunged into chaos as policemen from the RRS division descended upon the Irorin Quarters, unleashing unprovoked violence on residents. The police action, allegedly aimed at sustaining the harassment of the Obaru Adimula, a revered deity priest, has left a trail of destruction and terror in its wake.
Background to the Crisis

Oba Adebanji Ajibade Alabe |
The Alawe of Ilawe-Ekiti, the monarch of the town, has been embroiled in a long-standing dispute with the Obaru Adimula, having dragged him to court multiple times over the past eight years to challenge his traditional authority.
Despite court rulings affirming the Obaru Adimula's authority, the Alawe has continued to disregard the rulings, sparking concerns about his commitment to the rule of law.
The Incident
Eyewitnesses report that the policemen, armed and in large numbers, arrived in the Irorin Quarters, firing guns uncontrollably, shooting tear gas, and destroying property. Residents, including innocent bystanders, were indiscriminately arrested, and their businesses disrupted. The police action has been widely condemned as excessive and unwarranted.
Official Actions
Attached is the official petition written to the National Security Adviser (NSA), Department of Security Service, and through the Inspector General of Police, which has received a timely response from the Inspector General of Police, mandating the Commissioner of Police in Ekiti State to deal with the matter of contempt of court.
Call to Action
We, the peace-loving residents of Ilawe-Ekiti, cry out to all authorities, traditional and governmental, to intervene immediately to restore peace and order in our community. We demand:
- An end to the Alawe's reign of terror and harassment of the Obaru Adimula
- Respect for court rulings and the rule of law
- Protection of citizens' rights and property
- Dialogue and negotiation to resolve disputes
We urge the Inspector General of Police, the Ekiti State Government, and other relevant authorities to take immediate action to address this crisis and prevent further escalation.
Signed
On behalf of all peace-loving individuals in the community.
