Pess Release

The leadership of the National Association of Nigerian Students (NANS), Joint Campus Council (JCC) Osun State, heartily commends our National President  a leader who has stayed true to his manifesto, who views issues from the students perspective rather than the management’s, and who refuses to compromise students welfare in the name of negotiation. We appreciate his recent successful campus tour across Osun State, which brought renewed hope and energy to the students movement.

The visitation was filled with purposeful engagements and honest agitation on issues affecting the student community. The delegation visited nearly all tertiary institutions in Osun State, with major emphasis on  Osun State University (UNIOSUN) and the Osun State College of Health Technology, Ilesa .

The contentious 120% increment in UNIOSUN tuition fees  was critically addressed in a high-level meeting involving the NANS National Leadership, Zonal Leadership, and NANS JCC Osun Leadership alongside the Vice-Chancellor and management team.

During the meeting, NANS made it clear that such an astronomical increase is unprecedented not just in Nigeria, but globally it cannot be justified under any circumstances. We further to check and implore them not to take such advantage on students loan and pointed out that while the government has introduced student loans, not every student is eligible or successful in securing them, meaning such increments would place an unbearable burden on thousands of students.

The university management presented its own perspective; however, the NANS National President stood firm, demanding  no less than a 70% reduction in the fee hike.

He reminded the Vice-Chancellor that NANS operates by the “three Cs of Aluta”: *Consultation, Consolidation, and Confrontation*. Having consulted the management, we are now moving towards government consolidation, and we may add a fourth “C” **Communication* before we are forced to confront, if the issue remains unresolved.

Immediately after the meeting, the NANS National President met with the *Commissioner for Youth Affairs, where the challenges at UNIOSUN and the poor infrastructure at the *College of Health Technology, Ilesa*, were thoroughly discussed. The Commissioner expressed understanding and gave assurances that steps would be taken.

The following day, NANS further engaged the *Commissioner for Education* and later the *Deputy Governor of Osun State*, who both listened attentively and promised to summon the UNIOSUN management for a detailed review and intervention regarding the fee hike. We remain optimistic that their assurances will translate into tangible actions.

Comrade *Olusola Ladoja*, NANS president, also appealed to the Osun State Government to provide *official mobility (vehicles)* for the NANS state structure and individual campus unions to enhance coordination and accessibility across campuses in the state.

He emphasized that supporting student mobility would not only ease operations but also strengthen government-student relations, given that students constitute over *75% of the youth population* in Osun State.

We, the leadership of NANS JCC Osun, express our profound gratitude to Comrade Olusola Ladoja our global president of NANS, the Commissioner for Youth, the *Commissioner for Education*, and the *Deputy Governor of Osun State for granting us audience and for their commitment to resolving these pressing issues.

Their openness and responsiveness give us hope that the struggle for affordable education and improved welfare in Osun State is yielding positive results.
