In the realm of public service, certain individuals stand out not just for their positions but for their unwavering commitment to the betterment of society.
My recent experiences with two exemplary public officials during the Consultative Policy Dissemination and Implementation Conference, co-convened by Gender Mobile Initiative (GMi) and the Independent Corrupt Practices and Other Related Offences Commission (ICPC), have reaffirmed my belief in the potential of some Nigerian public officers to effect meaningful change in the country.
Planning the Conference, which was aimed at engaging stakeholders on prevention of sexual harassment in tertiary education institutions in Nigeria, involved extensive engagement with numerous public officials. While I interacted with hundreds of different government officials before, during and after the event, two individuals stood out; Dr. Musa Adamu Aliyu, SAN, Chairman of the ICPC and the Honourable Minister of State for Education, Dr Yusuf Sununu.
The role of the ICPC in fostering transparency and integrity within Nigeria cannot be overstated. At the helm of this vital institution is Dr. Musa Adamu Aliyu, SAN, whose leadership and vision have significantly bolstered the fight against corruption. In the lead-up to the Conference, Dr. Aliyu demonstrated an exceptional level of openness and willingness to collaborate. His proactive stance ensured that the event was not only a success but also a platform for meaningful discourse on sexual harassment prevention.
Dr. Aliyu’s commitment to the cause was evident in every interaction we had. His dedication to ensuring that the ICPC played a pivotal role in the Conference highlighted his understanding of the broader impact of corruption on societal issues such as sexual harassment. Under his stewardship, the ICPC has shown that it is not just an anti-corruption body but a proactive partner in addressing critical social issues.
One particularly memorable event was my very first encounter with Dr. Aliyu just after his appointment as the chairman. I led a delegation to the Commission to present some of the programs we started with his predecessor. After a robust deliberation, Dr. Aliyu accompanied my team and I to the car park. This gesture went beyond humility; it demonstrated a rare leadership quality and my team and I felt highly privileged and honored. Dr Aliyu' s servant leadership style exemplifies how those entrusted with headship of public institutions can drive positive change through selflessness, integrity and vision.
Engaging with Honourable Yusuf Sununu was equally inspiring. Despite his demanding schedule, Minister Sununu recognized the importance of the Conference as a matter directly impacting his primary constituency. What was particularly noteworthy was the ease of access to the Minister.
When we wrote to invite Minister Sununu, we had no direct link to him. Yet, as a public officer with a heart for the constituency he represents, he accepted our invitation and came to the Conference. His initial intention was to deliver a brief remark and leave, given his congested itinerary. However, as the meeting progressed, I sensed his genuine interest and pleaded with him to stay for the session on Situational Analysis of Sexual Harassment and the subsequent Panel conversations.
Minister Sununu’s engagement was a revelation. Despite his busy schedule, he agreed to stay longer, negotiating his time with us. He listened with keen and rapt attention, fully immersed himself in the conversation. When it was time for him to leave, he did so with such humility, requesting permission and showing respect for the ongoing dialogue. His behavior was a stark contrast to the typical demeanor of public officers, embodying transformational, laissez-faire, and situational leadership.
Minister Sununu’s participation and support underscored his commitment to addressing the issues that affect the educational sector. His willingness to engage with stakeholders and his understanding of the critical nature of our engagement highlighted his dedication to improving the educational environment in Nigeria.
The experiences with Dr. Musa Adamu Aliyu and Honourable Yusuf Sununu during the Consultative Policy Dissemination and Implementation Conference have been profoundly encouraging.
The two gentlemen are remarkable for the simple fact that they each could have hidden behind the obtuse excuse of 'busy schedules' by sending some obscure representation. By their physical presence and active participation, both gentlemen not only underscored the importance they each attached to the collaboration, but also helped to inspire commitment of other participants to the realization of the core objectives of the Conference.
The Conference was attended by twenty five states Commissioners for higher education and the heads of several State and federal universities, Polytechnics and Colleges of Education from across the federation. Nigeria
hopefully, will be better for it.
These interactions have shown that with the right leadership, public institutions in Nigeria can be beacons of integrity, responsiveness, and collaboration. Both officials have set a high standard for what can be achieved when public officers are dedicated to their roles and genuinely committed to societal progress. It was therefore fitting and profoundly satisfying to see Dr Musa Aliyu who not only arrived promptly to give the welcome address to participants but also wait through to inaugurate a Winning Coalition at the end of the Conference.
As we continue to address the challenges within our institutions, the examples set by Dr. Aliyu and Hon Minister Sununu serve as a reminder that change is possible. Their exemplary dedication and proactive engagement have not only made the conference a success but have also reinforced the belief that with committed leadership, we can overcome the peculiar challenges faced by public officers in Nigeria. It is my hope that their stories inspire others within the public service to rise to the occasion and contribute meaningfully to the development of our nation.
