The National Association of Nigerian Students, Joint Campus Council (NANS JCC) Osun Axis, notes with concern that commitments earlier made to the student community by the state government are yet to be fulfilled.
In our various engagements with government representatives, we received assurances that our demands would be addressed before the end of September. However, almost a week after that timeline, there has been no meaningful progress. While we recognize and appreciate the government’s attention to other pressing projects, we must emphasize that students’ needs are equally genuine, urgent, and deserving of priority, particularly because firm promises were made to us.
This communiqué serves as a gentle reminder: the student community remains patient and cooperative, but patience has its limits. Our hope is that the government will act before we are compelled to adopt measures of last resort.
In line with the resolutions of our recent meetings, we expect reasonable and concrete steps this week. Should these issues remain unattended by the end of the week, we shall have no choice but to peacefully mobilize to express our displeasure and press for action. Accordingly, Monday, 13th October, has been designated as a day of peaceful action. We will mobilize our organs to the streets and the Government Secretariat to demand the fulfillment of our legitimate requests. We, however, trust in the commitment of our “talk-and-do” Governor not to let us down.
For clarity, the unresolved issues remain as follows:
1. Reconstruction of the Iree–Ada Road, a vital link for students and surrounding communities. Several students have sustained injuries commuting on this road, and tragically, some have lost their lives.
2. Provision of buses for our various local unions, out of which two have been promised for immediate delivery.
3. Construction of five (5) kilometres of road per campus across Osun State.
If truly the administration is people’s government, and students are a vital constituency of that people. We therefore remain hopeful that our concerns will be addressed promptly. Nonetheless, we are organized, committed, and prepared to stand together until these matters receive the attention they deserve.
